As I write this to you, many Shiite men, women, and children are going to mosques and to friends' homes to hear a story dramatically chanted of that terrible battle in Karbala, Iraq many years ago.

Even though that battle took place in 680 AD, many Shiites are crying even tonight, thousands hitting their chests in unison in a massive display of grief and lamentation over Imam Hussein's death.

Many Shiites from Iran to Iraq to Lebanon and beyond are agonizing over the death and suffering they see happening in Gaza now, and this, coupled with their deep emotional sorrow remembering Imam Hussein's death, is bubbling into a deep, collective turmoil that we - as followers of Christ who live, love, and work among them - can see and hear and feel.

For the next ten days through Jan. 7 will you ask God to move in Shiites' sadness and to display His glory among them? Will you pray that in the midst of their anguish and sorrow they will discover the beauty of Jesus and experience his awesome power?

Together, this Ashura, let's ask God to break into their world and to reveal Jesus as Savior, Redeemer, and Lord to Shiite families all over the earth!
